X-ray Beamline Scientist (DCS-CAT) To learn about the Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) and this position, please visit the DCS website. Experiments at the DCS utilize both x-ray and optical diagnostics to understand the shock compressed state of materials. X-ray diagnostics include state-of-the-art x-ray optics, high-speed choppers/shutters, and both commercially available and custom x-ray detector systems. Optical diagnostics employ a wide range of free-space and fiber-optics-based lasers, fast photodetectors, image intensifiers, ICCD’s, streak cameras, and other state-of-the-art electro-optic instrumentation. The successful candidate will be expected to operate and maintain these systems for a broad range of user experiments as well as design new systems and components specific to software/hardware controls (EPICS) to advance the capabilities of the DCS. An important aspect of this position is code development for remotely controlling x-ray beamline instrumentation and automated data acquisition and analysis. | April 24, 2024 |
Laser/Optical Physicist (DCS-CAT) To learn about the Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) and this position, please visit the DCS website. The successful candidate should enjoy hands-on work and problem solving in a fast-paced, research environment and will work with a team of physicists responsible for the operation and maintenance of the DCS 100J laser System to ensure optimal performance, develop new capabilities, and conduct state-of-the-art scientific experiments on behalf of users. Additionally, many of the experiments performed at the DCS utilize a wide variety of lasers that are integral to characterizing/understanding the shock compressed state of materials and wide array of optical detection and analysis approaches are utilized. While the primary responsibility of this position will be for the 100J laser, the successful candidate will also be expected to operate and maintain additional optical systems, as needed for a broad range of user experiments. | April 24, 2024 |
Laser/Optical Engineer (DCS-CAT) We are seeking to hire a strongly self-motivated, talented Laser Optical Engineer to support the research activities at a first-of-a-kind experimental user facility: The Dynamic Compression Sector (DCS) at the Advanced Photon Source (APS), Argonne National Laboratory. The successful candidate will perform hands-on work and operate/maintain the 100J laser system to ensure optimal performance and development of new capabilities. Surface Scattering and Microdiffraction Group Leader Argonne is a multidisciplinary science and engineering research center, where talented scientists and engineers work together to answer the biggest questions facing humanity, from how to obtain affordable clean energy to protecting ourselves and our environment. Argonne is looking for a group leader to manage, lead, and mentor the members of the Surface Scattering and Microdiffraction group (SSM) within the X-ray Science Division (XSD) at the Advanced Photon Source.
